The Department of Defense’s cybersecurity compliance program for contractors will be pared down in scope and expectations, according to an acquisition regulation document.


The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) will no longer require every contractor to get a third-party certification if they do not touch controlled unclassified data, a change that could reduce the cost of compliance for thousands of contractors.


Under the new CMMC model, which is known as CMMC 2.0, the number of security tiers is being shrunk from five to three. Novel CMMC maturity practices will also be eliminated from the standard.

As another government funding deadline approaches, we recommend that contractors take these steps to ensure they are prepared for the possibility of a government shutdown:


  • Analyze your contracts and communicate with your contracting officers in advance of any possible government shutdown.

  • Develop contingency plans for actions necessary in a shutdown.

  • Keep meticulous records to document a shutdown’s impact on your contracts, including costs incurred.

Federal contractors have until Dec. 8 to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the Biden administration said Friday in a new round of guidance detailing the latest pandemic policies.


The guidance, issued by the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force, details how agencies and federal contractors should comply with President Joe Biden’s Sept. 9 executive order.


The order described the process agencies will take to embed new safety protocols, which include the requirement that contractors be fully vaccinated, as clauses in government contracts and contract-like instruments.
